A Great Time At Country Week

Monday morning was here, and all the training sessions and team plays we had all done was going to be put into practice, an 8.30am start for the opening ceremony and the first games kicked off and the adrenalin was running thick and fast! The teams had mixed results but everyone gave their best and headed home, looking forward to relax and talk about the games, and what was ahead for the next day. After the evening meal each captain was to address the 115 strong Leeuwin Army and tell them how they had gone for the day , which was met with either a groan for a loss or a big cheer for a win , this was to become a big highlight of each day and a real bonding session for the players, the “Leeuwin Song” song was to be heard quite a few times and was always sung after the game if we had a win.

Day two and we were met with wintry conditions and it was very hard to play good football , but to our players credit they handled the conditions well, the “Leeuwin Song” was sung with gusto quite a few times and all age groups were doing well unfortunately the 15s boys were doing it tough but were always supporting the rest of the teams. As the week progressed there were mixed emotions , but one memory i have got was when our 15s boys had not won a game all week and were desperate for a win and also to sing the “Leeuwin Song”, the last game of the qualifying games saw them come up against the unbeaten Albany team , yes you guessed it they won 1-0!!, then i saw Leeuwin Players and coaches from all over the playing fields sprinting to the players to help them sing the “leeuwin Song”, what a memory!.
The final day was Grand Final day, and saw our 11s boys team in the final and come through with a 2-1 win and our 13s girls team finish runner up . the 13s boys came fourth and fifth, the 16s girls came fourth and the 15s boys were last in what was a very strong competition. To top off a great day and week Cedric Adinkwuye won the Fairest and Best for the 13s boys competition.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players , coaches and support crew for the week , we had a lot of laughter and a few tears but most of all great memories, and made some great friendships, if you want to learn the words to the “Leeuwin Song” , why don’t you ask one of the players who played, or better still try out for next year and we will teach you the words.
Yours in Sport
