Margaret River Munchkins v Vasse Hawks/Cornerstone Cubs

The Margaret River Munchkins played some awesome football at the weekend despite the absence of a few big names who were obviously enjoying a bit of sunshine up north.

Mikey Jeffs played a fantastic all round game with some great defending moves and attacking football. Casey Castle showed all involved just how good a striker he can be running the entire length of the field at times and finding the back of the net on  more than occasion. Jasper Hillman and Jaxon Deighton provided good defence and were often seen running wide of the pack waiting for the loose ball and regaining control.

This week the Vasse Hawks travelled to Margaret River to play the Munchkins.

It was a very cold start to the day but everyone warmed up quickly. With a shortage of players for the match, there were no substitutes and no time to get cold. Everyone got a great run and plenty of the ball.

Hannah and Jevon were strong in attack this week and Finn got straight into the action when he took the field. Amy recovered well from a nasty fall to get some kicks and Oli demonstrated some excellent kicking. Zach and Mackenzie also put in a very strong effort.

The Hawks played well as a team despite the holiday break and no doubt their team play will get even better after another week of training. Thanks to Amy and Mackenzie for filling in for the Munchkins.

This week the Vasse Hawks played GMAS Grasshoppers at Churchill Park.

Very wet and cold conditions threatened to disrupt the match but both teams braved the weather and relished to chance to play in the rain. Demonstrating that they had been paying attention at training, the Hawks passed in well from the sideline and shared the ball around making sure all players were involved in the game.

Hannah and Amy were strong in attack this week and Finn made an excellent defensive stop to put the Hawks into offence. Zach, Oli and Jevon had heaps of touches and really showed off their skills in the wet, while Mackenzie showed everyone how brave she is by recovering quickly from a painful ball to the head to get straight back into the thick of things.

With a couple of injuries this week, the Hawks will no doubt enjoy the holiday break and will return rested and ready to go.

FMR Munchkins versus SJMSC Joeys, Busselton 26 June 2010

Round 8 was the first rematch of the season with the Munchkins and Joeys going head to head to settle some old scores. The first half was hard fought in trying conditions with just a few golden goals. Casey Castle threaded one through a sea of legs brilliantly.

Jaxon Deighton was an absolute trooper giving it his all for the Munchkins when they needed him most. Bandits Jasper Hillman and Huon House had a great run, always amongst the action. Gratefully the sun shined in the second half as did Munchettes Ashley Jarvis and Lily Mondy who dazzled the Joeys. Well done Munchkins.

This week the Vasse Hawks played Capel Wolves in Capel.

Capel were short on players this week but despite playing with reduced numbers Vasse Hawks had a great time. Coach Sandra had a big interchange to contend with and did a great job keeping the players engaged in the game.

Every week, the Vasse Hawks players are improving their passing skills and working better as a team. The ball was shared well this week with some players getting their greatest number of touches this season. The ball was carried into attack many times and the Hawks also ran well in defence.

The Hawks again showed fantastic sportsmanship and continue to have fun on and off the field, enjoying their half-time fruit break almost as much as the game. A big thank you to Jevon for filling in for Capel.

Margaret River Munchkins “VS” GMAS Grasshoppers

It would appear that the Margaret River Munchkins have been staying up late for the last week watching the World Cup and gaining inspiration.

Team work is the new black, and the mid week training sessions are paying off with great displays of backing up and passing on display in this game against the Grasshoppers.

Despite a wet start to the first match, the Munchkins showed some great form with Danny Benedetti scoring a handful of goals with support from his other team mates Mikey Jeffs, Jack Holzer, Max Douglas and Jasper Hillman.

Vasse Hawks v GMAS Roos at Churchill Park.

Fresh from the long-weekend break, the Hawks were full of enthusiasm and played an offensive game right from the start. Again they shared the ball with their teammates exceptionally well and all players had a go at carrying the ball down the pitch.

Hannah took control of the ball early and, along with Jevon, made some handy defensive stops against the flow of play.  Zach, Oli and Amy made some great offensive moves including some impressive solo runs toward goal and Mackenzie and Finn ran well and attacked the ball with gusto.

With many grandparents cheering them on this week, the players worked hard and never stopped running. Coming off such a fun game, the kids are keen to travel to Capel next week to take on the Capel Wolves.

FMR Munchkins versus Dunsborough Dolphins

On Saturday our Munchkins showed they’re made of the good stuff. Make no mistake the Dunsborough Dolphins are awesome. But it takes real courage and strength of character to face off against such a strong team. It was great to have Jaxon Deighton and Casey Castle back on the field, both clearly enjoyed themselves. While Jasper ‘The Rock’ Hillman is a very welcome pair of feet to the tribe. Ashley Jarvis was fantastic, making desperate saves and impressive attacks on goal for the duration of the match. Regrettably we only get to play the Dunsborough Dolphins once in the competition. Brilliant effort and determination Munchkins.

This week the Vasse Hawks travelled to Dunsborough to take on the Dunsborough Quindas.

The Hawks have obviously been paying attention to Coach Sandra at training and it is starting to pay off. They passed the ball to their teammates exceptionally well on Saturday resulting in all players getting plenty of the ball. They also used their voices well throughout the match, calling their teammates name with every kick.

Finn made an early impression this week with some good running and strong kicks early in the match. Hannah impressed for Cornerstone Cubs in the first half and then contributed well for the Hawks in the second.

FMR Munchkins versus Busselton Possums, Margaret River 29 May 2010

Saturday was a great day out, with enough Munchkins and Possums to play three pitches. It’s brilliant to see the overall level of play and general understanding of the game continuing to improve. Across the board the team is making a better attack on the goals. The Munchettes in particular are beginning to understand the difference between forward, mid-field and backs and proving to be a force on field.

Well done Munchkins, enjoy the long weekend break.

This week the Vasse Hawks braved the first wet day of the season to host the Capel Wolves Black team at Churchill Park.

Relishing a chance to play in the rain, Vasse Hawks were excited to take the field and get wet. Despite being undermanned, the Wolves were tough competition and both teams showed good skill in the wet conditions.

For the second week in a row Mackenzie was right in the thick of things and Sophie and Finn showed great promise when the ball came their way. Amy ran hard all game and demonstrated great teamwork with some unselfish passing. More experienced players Hannah and Jevon led by example with some great play and Oli and Zach continue to be almost unpassable in defence.

It was great to see so many players getting a good number of touches and pleasing to see the kids coming together so well as a team. Thanks to Amy for filling in for the Wolves and to Sandra for her committed coaching.

FMR Munchkins versus Dunsborough Quindas, Busselton 22 May 2010

Kicking off in horrid weather with just four die hard Munchkins, the ranks grew to seven as the rain cleared. Gratefully a spare Quinda (a flashy little chap we should see about signing) made it possible to play two concurrent games of four a side. What ensued was some really good football, a pleasure to watch. It seemed everyone had their running legs on and the Munchkins really took it up to the Quindas, arguably the best U6 team in the competition. Ashley Jarvis took a nasty whack, but courageously went back on to literally kick her boots off. Ever reliable Danny Benedetti was a wall of defence, saving goal after goal. While the unassuming Max Douglas blitzed them, in the first half hurtling down the side line and crossing to score a brilliant goal, beating three in the process. Viva la Munchkins!

Capel hosted the Vasse Hawks U/6 this week and the Hawks relied on teamwork in a tight match with a well-skilled Capel line-up.
Despite a few tumbles, the Hawks put their training into practise and demonstrated some great passing to their teammates and excellent running into defence when needed.

Mackenzie was in the thick of things this week along with Amy, Jevon and Hannah. Oli and Zach were tough to get the ball past as usual and Finn and Sophie made some great passes and positioned themselves well.

Again, the Hawks’ skills are improving with each passing week and the team are enjoying their matches.

Round 3: FMR Munchkins versus GMAS Roos,
Margaret River 15 May 2010

In difficult conditions where we’d normally tell them to “get out of the rain!”, the Munchkins showed real ticker. New recruit Mikey Jess played a great game in the mid field, regularly intercepting and feeding the ball forward to team mates. Jack Holzer, Jaxon Deighton and Max Douglas all made strong contributions. While the Munchettes; Lily Mondy, Lizy Wilkie and Ashley Jarvis were simply outstanding. A Munchkin short of a picnic in the second half; Casey Castle, Danny Benedetti and Huon House showed real determination to defend and ultimately score against six GMAS Roos! Here’s hoping for more sun and less frizzy hair next Round. Well done Munchkins, you make us proud.

Busselton 8 May 2010

The Munchkins’ first road trip was a double header against the Cornerstone Cubs and Vasse Hawks. Fresh conditions did nothing to cool the Munchkins’ endeavour, ruffling their share fur and feathers. It was pleasing to see such young footballers playing with teamwork to get the job done, resulting in first ever goals for many. The terrific trio of Lily Mondy, Lizy Wilkie and Ashley Jarvis were wonderful to watch, working the ball forward through a determined defence to net their share of goals. Special mention must go to Casey Castle who had a blinder, dominating play with dexterous control and speed. Well done FMR Munchkins, a fantastic effort all round.
