Margaret River Gremlins Vs Busselton Eagles
Margaret River Gremlins bounced back after a heavy loss last week, to play some of their best football for the season. Tomo Baker was exceptional playing in defence, reading the play and timing his tackles well. His efforts against larger opponents earned him an Eagle Boys Pizza. Great effort Tomo.
Tomo was well supported by Mira and Isha Atkinson who have both showed an increased understanding of the game. Well done girls.
Caleb Smirke played an exceptional game and is consistent week to week in his efforts on the pitch. He also won a Pizza for his effort. Ebony Molly and Addison all worked well together creating many chances at goal, with Josh Lane taking the opportunity to score on several occasions. Josh also won an Eagle Boys award.
The highlight of this game was the team work and passing the players showed.
Well done Gremlins...
Gremlins VS Dunsborough Sharks.
Saturdays match at Dunsborough saw a very well drilled Sharks side give the Gremlins a lesson in playing team football. Their strong attack on goal rattled the Gremlins in the first half as they were left a little shell shocked by the skill of their opponents.
There was some great defensive work from Addison Edward Smith, constantly covering ground to defend. Flynn Winstanly was another to defend strongly, He and Molly Quick both gave 100% all day, tackling hard, and winning lots of ball for their team. Molly won the Eagle Boys Pizza Award for her effort and strong approach at her much larger opponents.
Josh Lane’s return from holidays was marked with winning the SW Pets player award. Josh scored Gremlins only goal for the day and was our standout in attack.
It was good to see the Sharks play such a great team game. The Gremlins should learn from them that the way to score goals is through team play. The other ingredient is skill development so parents make 10 mins every couple of days for a kick around and we will see improvement.
A big thanks to the Atkinson girls for filling in, I’m sure Mira loves playing with you. Go Gremlins.
The Gremlins again showed improvement in their games against the Crazy 8s on Saturday.
Tomo Baker was given a new role in the backline and showed great poise, controlling the ball and passing off to both wings. Mira Atkinson played her best game for the season with some powerful kicking and an understanding of moving into position to support team mates. (Early Friday nights for Mira from now on!). Mira, Caleb and Molly supported Tomo well but unfortunately could not find a goal although they came close a couple of times.
Flynn Winstanly also played a key role in the backline, with some accurate passing and team play with Addison and Ebony. Flynn won the Player of the day award.
Ebony scored the only Gremlins goal for the day. Well done. Great work Gremlins!
Having to borrow a player from the Magpies made little difference to the steady improvement of the Gremlins passing and team play. The strong defence from Matt Doig and Flynn Winstanly was supported by both from Molly Quick and Caleb Smirke. All these guys are playing good positional football now.
Caleb scored a goal and Molly was given the Sports Power player award for her hard tackling, control on the ball and passing. Tomo Baker ran hard all game and was rewarded with a couple of goals. Great tackling too. Tomo recieved the South West Pets award for the match.
This was a great game. Well Done Gremlins...
Margaret River Gremlins v Cornerstone
The Gremlins under 8's soccer team played in gale force winds against Cornerstone on Saturday. Both muddy conditions and smooth attacking by the opposition required a lot of defensive work, stand outs were Flynn Winstanley and Tomo Baker.
Matthew Doig showed courage with many shots at goal, keep trying Matt, enjoy the pizza award for your efforts! Caleb Smirke scored multiple fantastic goals. Addison Edwards Smith receives the Sports Power player of the day award.
Saturday 20th June saw the 6 and Under Margaret River Bumble Bees at home taking on the Vasse Hawks. Watching the Hawks warming up it was evident immediately that the Bees would be pushed and would have to be at their best to come away winners. A titanic struggle ensued with both teams battling not just each other but the perfect storm including an icy deluge of hail.
All players and parents deserve credit for soldiering on in the inclement conditions. Special mention goes to Noah ‘x-files’ Mulder who thrived in the wet, tackling relentlessly, showing great second and third efforts, literally forcing the ball forward while at times totally outnumbered by the opposition. Noah deservedly picks up the ‘player of the week’ award.
Bryce Bennett’s mauling style of play was suited to the wet weather and the development and strength of Bryce’s right boot cleared the Bees out of trouble on many occasions. Congratulations to Bryce for winning the coach’s ‘encouragement award’ for round 7.
The MR Mambos v Busselton Dingos
The Mambos played an away game on Saturday against a determined Dingos side from Busselton. The great weather set the scene for a fast, free flowing, goal bonanza. The Mambos continued their great passing and combined well to produce another stellar performance.
Annika Keall was excellent, scoring 2 goals. Jai Stanley, Brodie Waters-Boyd, Daniel Somerville and Brodey Deighton all contributed with amazing goals. Jasper Harvey, Hugo Douglas and Gemma Lea produced some skilful tackles and clearances. The captain Freya Lagan was a focal point in attack and defence, leading by example throughout the day. Thank you to all parent helpers, and congratulations to all players for an excellent game. Go Mambos.
Margaret River Gremlins v Dunsborough Sharks
Margaret River Under-8 Gremlins had an even-sided game against Dunsborough Sharks in Margaret River on Saturday.
Josh Lane fired out three goals for the day, a reward for his determination.
It was goal-for goal throughout the match, with Molly Quick and Mira Atkinson helping Dunsborough out because they were short a player. Ebony Afcombe kicked her first goal and Caleb Smirke and Flynn Winstanley also scored for the Gremlins.
Sports Power Player of the Day went to Tomo Baker. Coach Tim Quick said Tomo had tackled sensationally and showed excellent footwork and in the forward line, with a couple of near-goals.
Mambo’s V’s Dunsborough
The Mambo’s travelled to Busselton to play a very well drilled Dunsborough side on Saturday morning. Having trained in the pouring rain during the week the Mambo’s were prepared for anything.
Daniel Somerville continued his fine form, after last week producing seven goal frenzy. Hugo Douglas continues to improve and shows many skills beyond his first year of competition.
Jai Stanley was welcomed back after a week off and showed he had lost none of his previous stellar form. Brodie Waters-Boyd continues to control the ball well and has developed an excellent passing technique.
Each team was eager to impress and the action was fast and furious. Some excellent skills were on display with Jai Stanley, Annika Keall and Brodey Deighton attacking well. Freya Lagan and Gemma Lea proved to be a formidable combination in defense.
Hugo Douglas and Brodie Waters-Boyd continued their stellar form in all parts of the pitch. Jasper Harvey worked tirelessly all day and romped away with the ‘SOUTH WEST PETS’ player of the round award. Many thanks go to all the parent helpers for controlling the games. Daniel Somerville is set to return next week, to even further strengthen the team. We would like to thank ‘SOUTH WEST PETS’ (Strelly Street Busselton) for their much appreciated support this season. Excellent game everyone, ‘GO MAMBO’S!
Small Sided Games: Margaret River Mambos V Cornerstone
The Mambos lined up on Saturday for their first kick of the season at Gloster Park, Margaret River.
This would be their first taste, of the much anticipated ‘Small Sided’ version of the game. The kids were quick to adjust to the game changes and new format, resulting in some excellent, free flowing play with greater opportunities to score.
Mambos 2 Racers 2
The Mambos and Racers faced off for a final home derby in front of a very excited and loud group of supporters. The action was fast paced and intense, as you would expect for a derby, with both sides wanting the win. The Mambos applied a lot of pressure in the first half resulting in a great team goal. Jai Stanley then produced the Mambos goal of the season to put the Mambos 2 goals ahead.
Margaret River Mambos played a tenacious Vasse U7 for a hard fought draw. Making the most of the beautiful sunshine, both teams produced a fabulous game with the result only decided in the dying minutes of the game.
